With the Spring holidays just around the corner there is no need to break the budget or be housebound. We have listed one great FREE activity to do these school holidays in each State and Territory in Australia. So if you are staying at home or travelling to another city – check out the list below for some school holiday inspiration:
Brisbane
Why not take the kids into the city and enjoy a FREE ferry ride on the Brisbane River? Brisbane City Council’s CityHopper is a free inner city ferry service for the Brisbane River. You can hop on and off the CityHopper. It runs every 30 minutes beginning at 6am to midnight every day of the week.
The CityHopper ferry stops at the following ferry terminals:
- North Quay, Brisbane City
- South Bank 3, South Brisbane
- Maritime Museum, South Brisbane
- Thornton Street, Kangaroo Point
- Eagle Street Pier, Brisbane City
- Holman Street, Kangaroo Point
- Dockside, Kangaroo Point
- Sydney Street, New Farm.

Sydney
Enjoy an afternoon of live music and entertainment at Sydney’s largest public rooftop garden with Spring Sounds on the Platform! It will be held on Saturday 12 October 2019 from 3pm to 9pm at The Coal Loader Platform, Waverton and it’s FREE.
The Coal Loader boasts stunning waterfront views and is a great spot to kick back and relax. Why not pack a picnic? This will be a family-friendly afternoon with acoustic artists performing across three stages, kids instrument making workshops and interactive performances. There will be good food and drinks available on site, although visitors are more than welcome to bring a picnic too.
What to Bring
Picnic blanket, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle (refill stations on site) and keep-cups for coffee/tea.

Canberra
I love Canberra. Our family visited in the Winter holidays this year and I was pleasantly surprised that the majority of the sight-seeing attractions are free for families to visit.
In addition to this, Marketplace Gungahlin are offering FREE school holiday fun in the Activity Hub (just outside BigW). Activities are happening every day (except the Labour Day Public Holiday) featuring mindfulness, sensory and skilled base play.

Melbourne
On Sunday 29 September 2019, the MCG will once again host its FREE open day from 11am – 4pm. This popular event is open to all members of the public, and is a great chance to bring the kids along for some free FUN during the school holidays.
There will be loads of activities and entertainment for the kiddos, including face painting, cricket clinics, mascot races, animal petting zoo, pony rides, silent disco, colouring activities etc.
Adelaide
Why not visit the Jam Factory these school holidays for a FREE tour. Their tours run Monday to Friday beginning at 11am each day. We suggest you time your visit to coincide with their daily glassblowing demonstrations which are absolutely fascinating for all ages. These are from 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm daily (aside from Wednesday afternoons). The Jam Factory is at 19 Morphett Street, Adelaide and is well worth a visit.

Perth
Do you have a budding fire-fighter in your family? Then take them along to The Department of Fire & Emergency Services Education & Heritage Centre, located in the original Perth Central Fire Station. It is a beautifully restored building and the kids will love the real fire truck with flashing lights and open compartments.
Every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 10am to 3pm they run FREE holiday activities where the kids can dress up like fire-fighters and have their photo taken in front of the fire truck.

Northern Territory
Go to Infinity & Beyond at the Darwin City Library on Thursday 10 October 2019 with their FREE showing of Toy Story 4!
It will be running from 2pm in the library. The local libraries have a host of fantastic FREE activities going on these school holidays. Click here for many more details.
Tasmania
Join the FREE FlowerPot Frenzy at the Kingston Library on Tuesday 8 October 2019 from 1pm-3pm. Run in conjunction with Bunnings, the kiddos will have the opportunity to decorate a pot and then plant a seedling ready to take home & enjoy. Bunnings are generously providing all materials. There is no need to book, just call in. It is for ages 5+ and children must be accompanied by an adult.
