Last weekend, we had the opportunity to get away for a kid free ‘mini break’ and check out the new Calile Hotel on James Street, Brisbane. We have watched eagerly as it was being constructed and couldn’t wait to stay. This is what we discovered:
Where is it?
The Calile opened in November 2018 and is located on James Street, Fortitude Valley. It is only 3.5 kms from Brisbane CBD and is a great spot to stay if you are travelling from interstate as everything is close-by.
What Is It Like?
Simply put, it is stunning. It is minimalist, fresh and celebrates all the good points of living in Brisbane with its outdoors, subtropical lifestyle. As General Manager, Jeremy Nordkamp says of the hotel “Let’s be Brisbane. Let’s celebrate the fact that we have this beautiful weather 10 months of the year.” It is bright, breezy and has a definite resort feel even though you’re right in the middle of town. The corridors are wide and feature beautiful white breeze blocks and large potted plants. (Not a dark, musty corridor in sight.) There are even chilled drink bubblers on each level just outside the lifts for you to refill your drink bottle before venturing out.
The exterior of this $100m urban resort is a mix of white brick and concrete with beautiful, curvaceous arches. Palm trees also feature throughout and soften the surrounds creating a very ‘LA’ kind of vibe.
On ground level you will find reception, a lobby bar and a mix of gorgeous boutiques.
What Are The Rooms Like?
The rooms are nothing short of beautiful and well thought out. They range from Urban rooms through to Suites, with most rooms featuring balconies. They are fitted out in soothing pastel colours and feature a mix of timber & marble with fresh white linen. They ooze a sense of calm and you can’t help but feel relaxed.
They have also thought of everything with beautiful toiletries and essentials provided.
What Facilities Do They Have?
The highlight would have to the pool side precinct on Level 1. You could literally stay there all day. There is a mix of cabanas and lounges to choose from around the pool with full waiter service. Also on this level is the Hellenika restaurant serving delicious, authentic Greek fare. You can check out their menu here.
There is also a fitness centre, library, Day Spa, restaurant & bar options and complimentary wi-fi.
What Is Close By?
Being on James Street you are spoiled for choice for retail therapy and restaurant options….not to mention The Palace Cinemas located directly across the road. Also a short stroll away is Teneriffe (where you can catch a CityCat Ferry along the Brisbane River), the CBD and from there you could go on to Southbank.
Things To Note:
- Check in is at 2pm
- Check out is a leisurely 11am
- Parking is available on site
- No pets allowed.
- No smoking on site.
Is It Family Friendly?
Although we did see quite a few families staying, I wouldn’t say it’s an ideal spot for young families. The pool area is more for wading than bomb-diving – if you know what we mean.
However, it is the perfect getaway if you are planning one of those with a loved one in the near future. We certainly loved it and because of its close proximity to everything we felt like we did a lot of things in a short amount of time. A weekend can feel like a long time in a relaxed, calm environment. We’ll be back.
